The brief
This timber orangery near Haslemere, Surrey, was commissioned to create a light-filled extension that connects the home directly to the garden while providing an elegant new family space.
The homeowners wanted an orangery that would enhance the kitchen and sitting areas, while opening the house up to its landscaped surroundings. Timber was chosen as the principal material, offering a natural warmth that complements the existing property. Its glazed lantern roof and full-height windows maximise light throughout the day.
The design
The defining feature is a set of timber bi-fold doors. These span almost the entire width of the orangery, folding neatly to one side to create an uninterrupted threshold between the interior and the garden.
This design allows the space to transform instantly: enclosed and cosy in cooler months, yet expansive and open in summer when indoor and outdoor living flow seamlessly together.
Before the addition, the kitchen and sitting areas felt self-contained, with limited connection to the outdoors. The orangery now acts as the central hub of the home, linking these spaces while drawing the garden into everyday life.
Morning light floods the kitchen through the glazed extension, while in the evening, the sitting area benefits from views across the lawn.
With the bifolds open, the terrace becomes a natural continuation of the interior, perfect for entertaining.
Even when closed, the slender sightlines of the glazing maintain a constant sense of connection to the outdoors.
Materials & details
The roof lantern is a key architectural feature, pulling daylight into the centre of the space, while the bifold mechanism is engineered for smooth, effortless operation.
High-performance glass provides excellent insulation, ensuring year-round comfort without compromising the orangery’s airy, open character.
Subtle paintwork highlights the natural texture of the timber, tying the extension into its surroundings.
Since completion, the orangery has transformed daily living for the homeowners.
It functions as a flexible extension of the kitchen and sitting area, serving as a breakfast spot, a quiet retreat, or an entertainment zone depending on the occasion.
In warm weather, the folding doors make garden dining effortless, while in winter the orangery remains bright and welcoming.
