We designed and built a stylish orangery at a period property in the Surrey Hills near Dorking
The brief
The owners of this stunning country home in the beautiful Surrey Hills near Dorking were keen to transform their ageing conservatory into a more functional and aesthetically pleasing space.
While they appreciated the charm of the original structure, it simply wasn’t practical for year-round use.
The extremes of summer heat and winter chill rendered the space uncomfortable for much of the year.
They were looking for a solution that would offer improved thermal efficiency while blending seamlessly with the character of their home.
The design
Fortunately, the base and floor of the existing conservatory were in excellent condition, and the interior décor had been thoughtfully curated.
Rather than disrupt what was already working, we focused our efforts on replacing the superstructure.
A bespoke timber orangery was the ideal solution, incorporating an insulated roof and a central glazed lantern featuring state-of-the-art, heat-reflective, self-cleaning double glazing.
A key aspect of our design was to raise the interior ceiling height, mirroring the high ceilings found throughout the main house.
This allowed the orangery to feel like a natural continuation of the living space, enhancing the overall flow and functionality.
Externally, we sought to create something architecturally striking yet harmonious with the original design.
Completing the project
We introduced finely detailed pilasters at each corner and an elegant fascia that framed the structure beautifully. High-performance double-glazed windows and doors ensure excellent thermal regulation throughout the seasons.
Crafted in sustainably sourced Sapele hardwood, the orangery offers durability and natural moisture resistance. Each element is factory-finished with weather-resistant microporous paint, and windows and doors are pre-glazed to maintain exceptional installation quality.
The transformation has exceeded expectations. What was once an underused space is now the most loved room in the house; a tranquil, all-weather retreat with panoramic views of the glorious gardens.

All works, even those carried out by our contractors, are covered by our warranty. And, 12 months after the installation has been completed, we return to check everything is in good working order and the orangery has settled in over the past year.
