Traditional timber orangery on a country cottage within South Downs National Park near Arundel, West Sussex

A timber orangery on this beautiful country cottage within the South Downs National Park, on the outskirts of the picturesque West Sussex market town of Arundel.

Many rural cottages, while stunning from the outside can be quite dark on the inside. The client wanted a light, bright extension for his family to use as a study and music room.

The challenge was to ensure the addition of the orangery did not spoil the cottage, within its stunning garden setting.

Instead of using a traditional orangery fascia (the section above the windows) with its steep sides and hidden internal gutter, we reduced the impact of the orangery with a less imposing fascia more sympathetic to the cottage style of the property.

As a nod to the leaded windows on the cottage we introduced simple cross bars in the windows, maintaining that cosy, inclusive feel whilst still providing a bright open room for the family to enjoy.
