We designed and built a contemporary orangery extension, designed for open-plan living in Hampshire.

The brief

At Goodwood Orangeries, every project is designed to complement the character of the home while transforming the way it is used.

This beautiful hardwood orangery is a perfect example, creating a stunning open-plan kitchen and dining space that feels both elegant and practical for modern family living.

The homeowners wanted to replace a series of smaller, separated rooms with one generous living space that would become the heart of the home.

Their vision was a light-filled kitchen and dining area where family and friends could gather, with uninterrupted views across the garden and a seamless connection between the original house and the new extension.

To achieve this, it was essential that the orangery looked as though it had always been part of the property, respecting its traditional architecture while introducing a contemporary, open-plan layout.

The design

The bespoke orangery was constructed using hardwood joinery, providing timeless elegance and exceptional durability.

Brick dwarf walls were built using bricks carefully matched to the existing house, ensuring the extension blended seamlessly with the original property.

Two large roof lanterns flood the interior with daylight, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere from morning through to evening.

The abundance of natural light enhances the sense of space, creating an inviting environment that is perfect for both everyday family life and entertaining.

The generous proportions of the orangery comfortably accommodate a large dining table alongside the new kitchen, making the room equally suited to everyday family life and hosting guests.

The build process

This project involved significant structural alterations to the existing house.

The original ground floor bay windows were carefully removed, while the first-floor bays above were retained.

To support these remaining structures, a new steel framework was engineered and installed, creating a strong structural solution without compromising the appearance of the property.

With the bays supported, two large openings were formed where the original bay windows once stood.

These wide openings allowed the new orangery to flow effortlessly into the existing home, creating a spacious kitchen and dining room with excellent natural light throughout.

The finished result

The completed orangery has completely transformed the way the homeowners use their property.

What was once a series of separate rooms is now one expansive, light-filled living space that naturally brings the family together.

By combining traditional craftsmanship with carefully considered structural engineering, this bespoke hardwood orangery feels like an original part of the home while providing all the benefits of modern open-plan living.
