We designed and built a stylish, bespoke hardwood orangery near Hook, Hampshire.

The brief

The homeowners of this property near Hook, Hampshire approached Goodwood Orangeries with the aim of transforming their existing kitchen into a brighter, more open space better suited to modern family living.

While the original kitchen was functional, it lacked the openness and natural light the clients wanted for day-to-day life.

Their vision was to create a spacious kitchen and dining area that would act as the heart of the home – a welcoming space for cooking, dining, entertaining, and spending time together as a family.

Just as importantly, they wanted the new space to connect naturally with the garden, allowing them to enjoy both indoor and outdoor living throughout the year.

To achieve this, Goodwood Orangeries designed a bespoke hardwood orangery extension that would complement the existing property while creating the light-filled space the homeowners were looking for.

Structural changes & planning

Creating the open-plan layout required significant structural work.

The wall between the original house and the new orangery was removed, leaving minimal returns on either side to maximise the sense of space between the two areas.

A structural steel beam was installed and recessed into the ceiling, allowing for a completely flush ceiling line between the existing house and the extension. This clever solution ensures the orangery feels like a seamless continuation of the home rather than a separate addition.

As the extension required planning permission, Goodwood Orangeries managed the entire application process on behalf of the homeowners, ensuring the necessary approvals were secured and the project progressed smoothly.

The design

The orangery was carefully designed to blend beautifully with the character of the existing property.

The exterior brickwork was matched to the original house, while the hardwood joinery was painted to complement the home’s existing timber windows, helping the new extension feel like a natural part of the property.

A key design feature of the space is the impressive double roof lantern.

Positioned above the main living area, the lanterns flood the room with natural light throughout the day, creating a bright and uplifting atmosphere while enhancing the sense of height and openness.

Large doors open directly onto the homeowners’ outdoor kitchen area, creating a seamless connection between the interior space and the garden.

What was once a smaller, enclosed kitchen is now a bright and spacious open-plan kitchen-dining hub that works perfectly for modern family life.
