How long does it take to build an orangery? A step-by-step guide

If you’re thinking about adding an orangery to your home, one of the first questions you’ll likely ask is, “How long will it take?”

Building an orangery is an exciting project that adds light, space, and value to your property, but it does require careful planning and realistic timeframes.

1. Design and consultation stage (2–6 weeks)

Before any building begins, the design and planning phase is crucial. This is where you’ll work with our Orangery Designer to discuss your vision, budget, and design preferences.

Our team will take detailed measurements, provide drawings, and ensure your chosen style complements your home’s architecture.

Depending on the complexity of the design and how quickly decisions are made, this stage can take anywhere from two to six weeks.

During this period, you’ll also receive a full quotation and finalise the materials, glazing options, and finishes.

2. Planning Permission and Building Regulations (8-12 weeks)

Not all orangeries require planning permission, but it’s essential to check before work begins. In many cases, an orangery can be built under Permitted Development Rights, but if your design is large or your property is listed, formal permission may be needed.

Our Planning Specialist will guide you through the process and handle most of the paperwork. Waiting for planning approval typically takes around 8–12 weeks, though it can vary depending on your local authority.

3. Manufacturing and preparation (6 weeks)

Once designs are approved, the manufacturing of your orangery components begins. This includes the bespoke frames, roof structure, glazing, and brickwork materials. During this time, groundwork preparation can also start, ensuring that foundations, drainage, and base construction are ready for installation.

4. On-site construction (6-12 weeks)

The actual construction time for an orangery usually ranges from six to twelve weeks, depending on size, complexity, and weather conditions.

The process typically involves:

  • Building the base and foundations
  • Constructing walls and brickwork
  • Installing frames, glazing, and roof lanterns
  • Completing interior plastering, flooring, and finishing touches

In Total:

From initial design to final completion, most homeowners can expect their orangery project to take approximately between 4 and 12 months.

The result is a beautifully crafted space that enhances your home’s character, floods it with natural light, and provides year-round comfort; making the planning and waiting well worth it.
